Det Lyse Bal

Det Lyse Bal is an evening of both group dances and partner dances, with music tailored to the steps and turns, picked from the Danish treasure chest of folk dances. The ball presents newly composed and newly arranged folk music for string quintet and percussion.

Kristine Heebøll's compositions turn the heat up on catchy melodies, lyrical passages and spiced chords, and they form the backbone of a carefully built progression through the evening. The technical finesse of the strings and the grooving percussion open a new and exciting embrace for folk dance, and give the traditional dance evening a burst of fresh energy.

Dance master Henrik Larsen guides the room through the ball in collaboration with Nordisk Dans Aarhus. There is a short dance workshop before the ball begins, and well-placed guidance along the way, so you can join in whether you have danced all your life or never tried before.

Doors open at 18.30, the dance workshop starts at 19.00, the ball at 20.15, and the evening ends with a jam at 21.30.

On stage are Kristine Heebøll and Signe Kierkgaard Schmidt on violin, Clara Tesch on viola, Maja Freese on cello, Camilla Lykkegaard on bass, and Tina Quartey on percussion with congas, udu, berimbau, shekere and caxixi.

Nordisk Dans is a concept made by and for young enthusiasts of traditional dance and music. It began in Copenhagen in November 2016, when a small group of young people were missing a place to dance folk dances on their own terms, and it has since spread to Aarhus, Odense, Aalborg, Esbjerg, Roskilde and Svendborg.

Entry to the ball is free with a festival pass.
